Ability to Obtain Materials and Energy
Living organisms must also be able to obtain materials and energy. Plants use their chloroplasts to collect energy from the sun, and Sun Bears use their tongues. A Sun Bear's tongue is around 20-25cm in length on average, and they use this length to their advantage. They use their tongues to collect honey and grubs out of crevices. Malayan Sun Bears are also omnivores. They eat fruits, berries, insects, small birds, lizards, and rodents in addition to their consumption of honey. In populated areas, Sun Bears have been known to damage and eat crops, and livestock of farmers. They have also been known to eat garbage. Sun Bears use the food that they consume as energy. The nutrients and energy are absorbed through digestion.
